Transition Management
| Welcome |
|
We look forward to guiding your organization through its executive transition and providing ongoing leadership resources to build and strengthen your organization! What is an Executive Transition? An executive transition is a planned or unplanned loss of an
executive director, which forces an organization to go through a leadership
change. A study funded by the J.P.
Morgan Chase and the Annie E. Casey Foundations estimates that nearly seventy
percent (70%) of nonprofit organizations in the Greater New York Metropolitan
area (Tri-State) will experience an executive transition within the next five
years. Through its Executive Transition
and Leadership Program, the Support Center, with 20 years of experience in
strengthening the leadership and management capacity of nonprofit
organizations, offers guidance through the transition process and helps
organizations effectively handle the challenges that arise during a change in
leadership.

Executive transition management (ETM) is a comprehensive and proven strategic approach to planning and managing the executive transition process (leadership change). We not only assist nonprofit organizations in identifying qualified candidates through an executive search, but we also offer a variety of organizational development services tailored to the organization’s specific capacity building needs. With the guidance of ETM, organizations emerge from their transitions with a new executive director who fits their current and future leadership needs as well as with a greater level of health, stability and effectiveness. Utilizing this holistic approach, we provide strategic management through all three key phases of the transition period.

What is an Interim Executive Director (IED)? An Interim Executive Director (IED) has the chief responsibility of stepping into the Chief Executive position to offer strong, effective, but temporary leadership to an organization after its Executive Director has departed. The Interim Executive is given the task of ensuring that the organization remains stable and keeps moving in the right direction during the executive search process and until the next Executive Director is successfully hired. IED Duties & Responsibilities An IED’s duties and responsibilities typically include assessing and managing finances, overseeing program operations, tending to fund raising goals, addressing immediate or potential resource issues, supporting managers, and meeting the pressing needs of the board. However, the IED also addresses many additional needs typical of an agency going through an executive transition. The Interim Director attends to the fears and anxieties of the staff, funders, and agency supporters while working closely with the board to facilitate a successful transition. Also, it is quite typical for an IED to improve agency systems and generate a new excitement for the agency’s future. |
